North Carolina Youth Leadership Forum (NCYLF) is a state chapter of a national program that offers a week-long living and leadership skills course that welcomes young people from all disabilities between 15 and 30 years old. The program is run and planned by a committee made up of at least 51% youth and young adults with disabilities. Limited to just 20 delegates, the forum is held on the campus of North Carolina State University and includes community outings, social events, games and food as people hang out and get to know each other.
Delegates are taught self-advocacy skills and are expected to take those back to their community and apply them in their day-to-day life. Participants can only attend one session as a delegate but may come back and participate as a mentor or group leader.
The 2016 North Carolina Youth Leadership Forum was held June 13 – 17. Delegate applications for the 2017 forum will be available December 1, 2016 and are due by March 15, 2017. Watch the Alliance calendar and blog for updated information.
